Some clerics under the umbrella of a non-governmental organization United Pastors Initiative for Good Governance (UPIG) has called on politicians to obey the rule of law by giving room for transparency in the forthcoming general elections in Nigeria.
Chairman of the group, Reverend James Muya, while speaking to journalists at a press conference in Abuja stated that the event was organized as a result of the increased political activities in the countryand the need to sensitize the general public on nation building via democracy.
Reverend Muya who acknowledged the government’s efforts at fixing the country called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intensify efforts in tackling insecurity, economic downturn and the lingering strike of lecturers of the nation’s universities.
He also reiterated the role of religious leaders in ensuring peace and stability in the country.
“To the religious and traditional leaders, let us all open our eyes to see the need to challenge wrongs going on in the country”.
He further warned politicians who are considering rigging or destabilizing the electoral process to desist from doing so. “if for any reason you invest your money to pick a ticket, rest assured that you are going to make your party lose elections, because everyone will follow the right way this time”.
The event had in attendance Chaplains and Pastors from the Federal Capital Territory.
